Born in 1963 in Lisbon, Portugal, and living in Canada since 1978, Alexandra Mendès has been an active and engaged citizen since her college days.
Before she entered into the political realm, Alexandra began working for her community with the Maison Internationale de la Rive-Sud (MIRS), a non-profit community organization providing settlement and integration services to new immigrants and refugees. With a degree in Management of Non-Government Organisations, she thrived at the MIRS. From Coordinator and Deputy Director to Executive Director in 1996, she dedicated fifteen years of her professional life to the organization's governance, and advocacy reach.
Alexandra began her political career as a riding assistant to the Hon. Jacques Saada, from 2001 to 2006.
From 2008 to 2011, she was the Member of Parliament for Brossard - La Prairie. During that time, her actions in the House of Commons were a testament to her staunch dedication to her constituents, strongly advocating on such issues as the replacement of Champlain Bridge and obtaining Passport services at the Service Canada center in Brossard.
In October 2015, Alexandra Mendès returned to Parliament, this time as a Member of Parliament for the newly-established riding of Brossard–Saint–Lambert. In Parliament, she was Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (2015-2019), Vice-Chair and Canada’s representative at the International Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (2017-2019), among many other parliamentary commitments. After the 2019 general election, Alexandra was named Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
