Mashteuiatsh, a must-see destination in Lac Saint-Jean
Will you be visiting Lac-Saint-Jean this summer? Whether you travel by bike, motorcycle, with your family, or if you are the "van life" type, a visit to Mashteuiatsh is a must!
Located on the western shore of the Pekuakami River, the community of Mashteuiatsh is a must-see in the region. You will discover the richness of the native culture and the proverbial welcome of the Ilnu community.
What to do during your stay?
Follow in the footsteps of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh, First Nation of Pekuakami (Lac-Saint-Jean) by visiting the Amerindian Museum of Mashteuiatsh. The permanent exhibition Tshilanu Ilnuatsh, We the Ilnuatsh presents the culture and way of life of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh in an immersive exhibition. Guided by Kukum (grandmother) and Mushum (grandfather), you will discover the traditional activities related to each season.
Let's also mention the return of the Great Gathering of First Nations in a normal edition, with all the activities in person. This will be the perfect opportunity to take a cultural bath and share traditions with the Pekuakamiulnuatsh. The Great Gathering will take place on July 8-9-10, 2022. Watch for the release of the program and the online purchase of passports on Tourismemashteuiatsh.com and on the Facebook page of the Great Gathering.
Take a break and enjoy the sun, comfortably installed on the fine sand of the beach at Camping Robertson. In addition to swimming, the place is perfect for paddleboarding. It's also the perfect place to watch the sunset. And if you feel like having a bite to eat, stop by the Raf-inné, a nice little restaurant located on the beach.
Discover native arts and crafts in all their forms. In Mashteuiatsh, you will find several art and craft stores that showcase different creative techniques inspired by Aboriginal culture. You can even see artists and craftspeople at work and talk with them.
Soak up the beauty of the Pekuakami and have a picnic at the Uashassihtsh site. You will be able to see various traditional Aboriginal campsites. Children can also have fun at the park built on the site.
Ride the Véloroute des Bleuets and enjoy the scenery. The Saint-Prime - Mashteuiatsh - Roberval section is one of the most popular. It is accessible to all levels of cyclists and offers exceptional views. Do you ride an electric bike? You will find a charging station in the parking lot of the Carrefour d'accueil.
